Abstract:Metabolic syndrome is characterized by insulin resistance,obesity/overweight,and abnormalities in glucose and lipid metabolism,as well as hypertension.Epicardial adipose tissue(EAT)is a specialized type of adipose tissue with both the physiological function of energy storage and mechanical protection, and high secretory activity that releases various anti-inflammatory/inflammatory factors while regulating the intake/release of free fatty acids. It plays a crucial role in maintaining metabolic stability in individuals with metabolic syndrome. The rela-tionship between EAT and the components of metabolic syndrome has been extensively studied from the perspectives of ectopic fat deposition, free fatty acid overload,low-grade inflammation, and oxidative stress to elucidate the core mechanisms underlying this condition.Lifestyle modifications, drug interventions, and surgical procedures can reduce EAT volume to improve metabolic syndrome outcomes and decrease cardiovascular events. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the correlation between EAT and metabolic syndrome, its influencing mechanisms,as well as treatment strategies.
