Abstract:Objective To investigate the relation among sleep quality, hours of sleep and blood pressure variability in elderly patients with hypertension. Methods A total of632 elderly patients with essential hypertension were enrolled from January 2018 to January 2019 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Hebei North University. According to the hours of nighttime sleep, the patients were divided into group A(≤5 h, 198 cases), group B(5 h<the hours of nighttime sleep≤7 h, 212 cases) and group C(7 h<the hours of nighttime sleep≤8 h, 222 cases). According to the presence or absence of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome( OSAHS) , they were divided into OSAHS group(264 cases) and non-OSAHS group(368 cases). Blood pressure variability was analyzed among different groups. Results The 24 h, daytime and nocturnal variation coefficients of systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased with the prolonging of nighttime sleep(all P <0. 05). The 24 h, daytime and nocturnal variation coefficients of systolic blood pressure and nocturnal variation coefficient of diastolic blood pressure in OSAHS group were higher than those in non-OSAHS group[(9. 4 ± 2. 3) vs (8. 0 ± 2. 0), (12. 1 ± 2. 8) vs (10. 9 ± 2.4), (12.4 ±3.1) vs (11.1 ±2.8), (13.1 ±3.5) vs (11.4 ±2.9)](all P <0.05). Conclusion Poor sleep quality and short sleep time leads to high blood pressure variability in elderly hypertensive patients.
