Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of age on the prognosis of gastric cancer without distant metastasis. Methods From 2004 to 2009,14 436 patients with gastric cancer without distant metastasis were identified in the Surveillance,Epidemiology and End Results database of United States National Cancer Institute.Kaplan-Meier univariate analysis and Cox multivariate regression model were used to analyze the effects of age, sex, race and marital status on the 5-year survival rate. Results Univariate analysis showed that the 5-year survival rate was associated with age, marital status and race(all P < 0.05);sex showed no effect on the 5-year survival rate(P =0.513).Multivariate analysis showed that 66-75 years old patients had higher survival rates compared with those under 55 years old in all subjects[risk ratio =0.850,95% confidence interval(CI):0.784-0.922,P <0.001],males(risk ratio =0.851,95% CI:0.770-0.940),females(risk ratio =0.861,95% CI:0.747-0.993),non-Asian(risk ratio =0.820,95% CI:0.751-0.895) and patients with local advanced tumor (risk ratio =0.887,95%CI:0.809-0.972) (all P<0.05).Conclusion Age is an important prognostic factor in patients with gastric cancer without distant metastasis;66-75 years old is a protective factor of the prognosis.
