Abstract:Objective To investigate the relevance among serum thyroid hormone, thyroid function and diabetes in children. Methods From February 2013 to February 2017,123 children newly diagnosed of diabetes in Children's Hospital,Capital Institute of Pediatrics were analyzed as observation group;123 healthy children were analyzed as control group.Serum thyroid hormone level and thyroid dysfunction were recorded. The correlation between thyroid hormone and diabetes was analyzed. Results The level of free triiodothyronine(FT3) in observation group was significantly lower and levels of free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were significantly higher than those in control group [(4.4 ± 1.0) pmol/L vs (5.2 ± 1.1) pmol/L,(19.8 ± 2.8) pmol/L vs (16.5 ± 3.1) pmol/L,(2.3 ± 1.3) mU/L vs (2.0 ± 1.1) mU/L] (P < 0.05).The incidence of thyroid dysfunction in diabetic children was 22.8% (28/123).In observation group, partial correlation analysis showed that FT3 was negatively correlated with age, diabetes course and glycosylated hemoglobin (r =-0.329,-0.308,-0.324;P < 0.05);FT4 was positively correlated with age, diabetes course, fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin (r =0.370,0.403,0.406,0.462;P < 0.05);TSH was negatively correlated with age (r =-0.313).Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that FT3 and FT4 were risk factors of diabetes in children(odds ratio =2.194,5.909;95 % confidence interval:1.332-5.392,2.495-11.482;P < 0.05);TSH was not associated with diabetes in children(P > 0.05).Conclusions Thyroid hormone abnormality and thyroid dysfunction are common in children newly diagnosed of diabetes.FT3 and FT4 are risk factors of diabetes in children.
