Morphological changes of pulmonary vein and left atrium after radiofrequency catheter ablation in patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation

Abstract：Objective To investigate morphological changes of pulmonary vein and left atrium after radiofrequency catheter ablation in patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation.Methods From March 2009 to March 2015 in Xuanwu Hospital,Capital Medical University,52 cases of chronic heart failure without atrial fibrillation were enrolled as HF group;32 cases of heart failure complicated with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation were enrolled as HF + AF group;31 cases of other kinds of heart diseases without symptoms and signs of heart failure and atrial fibrillation were enrolled as control group.All patients had echocardiography and CT pulmonary vein angiography.Diameters of pulmonary vein ostia and left atrium were analyzed.Results Diameters of pulmonary vein ostia and left atrium in HF group and HF + AF group were significantly higher than those in control group before operation and 6 months after operation;diameters of pulmonary vein ostia and left atrium in HF + AF group were significantly higher than those in HF group (P ＜ 0.05 or P ＜ 0.01).In HF + AF group,diameters of 4 pulmonary vein ostia,anteroposterior and axial diameters of left atrium 6 months after operation were significantly lower than those before operation [pulmonary vein:(17.2 ± 2.7) mm vs (19.5 ± 2.6) mm,(19.9 ± 2.5) mm vs (22.2±2.3)mm,(16.3±2.5)mm vs (19.0±3.9)mm,(17.3 ±3.4)mm vs (19.5 ±3.0)mm,(14.9 ±2.3)mmvs (18.1 ±2.7)mm,(17.3±2.7)mm vs (20.5 ±2.4)mm,(15.1 ±3.5)mm vs (17.6±2.5)mm,(18.5±2.4)mm vs (20.4±2.3)mm;left atrium:(41.2±2.7)mm vs (45.9±5.1)mm,(59.9±2.3)mm vs (64.8±4.6)mm] (P＜0.05 or P＜0.01).Conclusion Radiofrequency catheter ablation has a significant therapeutic effect on patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
