Effect of simvastatin on prostate specific antigen in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia
Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of simvastatin on prostate specific antigen(PSA) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH).Methods Clinical data of 202 patients with BPH from June 2009 to April 2016 in the Eighth People's Hospital of Shanghai were collected. The patients were divided into observation group (n =94) and control group (n =108) according to the use of simvastatin;patients in observation group had simvastatin 20 mg/d for hyperlipemia;patients in control group did not have simvastatin.Serum levels of PSA before drug use and after 3,6,12 months of drug use were analyzed among age groups (51-60,61-70,≥71 years old) in observation group(30,36,28 cases) and control group(32,41,35 cases). Results Levels of PSA before drug use and after 3 months of drug use had no significant differences between observation group and control group(P >0.05).After 6 months, levels of PSA in 51-60,61-70,≥71 years old observation groups were significantly lower than those in same age control groups[(1.42 ±0.74) μg/L vs (1.88 ±0.98) μg/L,(1.81 ± 1.05)μg/Lvs (2.30 ± 0.93) μg/L,(1.94 ± 1.01)μg/L vs (2.42 ±0.80)μg/L] (P<0.05).After 12 months, levels of PSA in 51-60 and ≥71 years old observation groups were significantly lower than those in same age control groups [(1.28 ± 0.70) μg/L vs (1.75 ± 0.97) μg/L,(1.86 ± 0.80) μg/L vs (2.44 ± 0.89) μg/L] (P < 0.05);the difference of PSA level between 61-70 years old observation group and control group was not significant (P > 0.05).Conclusion Simvastatin can significantly lower PSA in BPH patients with hyperlipemia after 6 months of medication.
