Clinical significance of red blood cell distribution width variation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma
Abstract:Objective To investigate the variation and clinical significance of red blood cell distribution width(RDW) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Methods One hundred and sixty-nine cases of HCC from January 2010 to January 2014 in Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University were enrolled.Forty cases of normal controls were randomly chosen from physical health volunteers.RDW values, liver function indexes [alanine aminotransferase (ALT),total bilirubin (TB),γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT)],tumor markers[alpha-fetoprotein(AFP),carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA),CA199,CA125],tumor diameter, tumor depth and the degree of HCC differentiation were analyzed. Results The average RDW value of HCC patients was significantly higher than that of normal controls[(13.7 ± 1.8)% vs (12.1 ±0.5) %,P <0.001].HCC patients were divided into low RDW group(<13.5%,n =107) and high RDW group(> 13.5%,n =62);AFP,CA199,CA125 and GGT in high RDW group were significantly higher those in low RDW group[51.25 (3.99,1 210.00) μg/L vs 10.22 (3.36,323.40) μg/L,36.69 (13.85,48.34) kU/L vs 15.17 (9.74,27.99) kU/L,16.43 (12.38,32.72) kU/L vs 10.82 (8.29,19.97) kU/L,88.00 (43.00,312.00) U/L vs 52.00 (28.25,97.00) U/L] (P < 0.05);tumor diameter, tumor depth and differentiation degree had no significant difference between groups(P > 0.05).Conclusion RDW value in patients with HCC may be related to tumor markers and liver function.
