Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of smoking on heart function in healthy young men. Methods A total of 42 healthy young men who had physical examination from January to June 2016 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College were divided into smoking group and non-smoking group according to the smoking habit, with 21 cases in each group. The baseline data were collected;resting 12-lead electrocardiography, resting echocardiography and stress echocardiography were performed. After 1 week, the smoking group was given 1 cigarette per person to finish in 3-5 min, heart rate and blood pressure were measured immediately. Results Age,body mass index, waistline, hipline, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and electrocardiogram baseline parameters(heart rate,PR interval,QRS duration,QT interval,QTc interval) had no significant difference between groups(P > 0.05).The ratio of early diastolic peak velocity to late diastolic peak velocity of side wall in tissue Doppler echocardiogram in smoking group was significantly lower than that in non-smoking group [(1.55 ± 0.40) vs (1.85 ± 0.26)] (P < 0.05).One subject in smoking group had frequent ventricular extrasystole during exercise tolerance test and left the study. Results of stress echocardiogram showed that left ventricular fractional shortening in smoking group was significantly lower than that in non-smoking group;cardiac output, cardiac index and peak early systolic velocity of mitral annulus interventricular septum in tissue Doppler echocardiogram in smoking group were significantly higher than those in non-smoking group [(32.4 ± 3.8)% vs (35.4 ±1.9)%,(6.2±1.4)L/min vs (5.2 ±0.5)L/min,(3.03 ± 0.60) ml/m2 vs (2.12 ± 0.11) ml/m2,(0.18 ± 0.05) cm/s vs (0.14 ± 0.04) cm/s] (P < 0.05).The heart rate after smoking was significantly higher than that before smoking [(100 ± 18) times/min vs (83 ± 11) times/min] (P < 0.05).Conclusion Smoking has early negative effect on myocardial cells;myocardial systolic function decreases with the increase of exercise load and cardiac load.
