Effect of smoking cessation on mental state after percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with coronary atherosclerotic heart disease

Abstract:Objective To expore the effect of smoking cessation on mental state after percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI) in coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CHD) patients.Methods Totally 174 patients with CHD who had PCI from March to September 2014 in Beijing Anzhen Hospital,Capital Medical Hospital were divided into smoking cessation group (n =112) and smoking group (n =62) according to the follow-up information at 6 months after PCI.Hamilton Anxiety Scale(HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Scale(HAMD) were used to analyze mental states at admission and postoperative 6 months.Results Preoperative HAMA and HAMD scores had no significant differences between groups(P >0.05).Six months after operation,HAMA and HAMD scores in smoking cessation group were significantly lower than those before PCI [6(5,11) scores vs 10(7,12) scores,21 (16,25) scores vs 28 (22,30) scores] (all P < 0.05);HAMA and HAMD scores in smoking cessation group were significantly lower than those in smoking group [6 (5,11) scores vs 12 (8,15) scores,21 (16,25) scores vs 27 (21,30) scores] (P <0.05).Conclusion Quiting smoking is good for mental states in CHD patients after PCI.
