Abstract:Objective To explore the correlation between thyroid dysfunction and atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with hypertention. Methods Totally 784 patients with hypertension who underwent thyroid function examination from January 2011 to December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into hypertension complicated with AF group (261 cases) and pure hypertension group (523 cases). The age, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH),total triiodothyronine (TT3),total thyroxine (TT4),free triiodothyronine (FT3),free thyroxine (TT4) and high sensitive C reaction protein (hs-CRP) and proportion of left atrial enlargement were compared between groups.According to the TSH levels, the patients were divided into < 0.35 mIU/L group (80 cases),0.35-2.49 mIU/L group (344 cases),2.50-4.94 mIU/L group (272 cases) and >4.94 mIU/L group (88 cases).Above indexes were also compared among 4 groups. Results The age, levels of TT4 and FT4,proportion of left atrial enlargement in hypertension complicated with AF group were significantly higher than those in pure hypertension group [(76 ± 9) years vs (68 ± 12) years,(75.46 ± 32.06) μg/L vs (65.67 ± 13.38) μg/L,(12.01 ±5.17) ng/L vs (10.51±1.63) ng/L,55.2% (144/261) vs6.1% (32/523)] (all P < 0.05).The incidence of AF in TSH < 0.35 mIU/L group was significantly higher than that in 0.35-2.49 mIU/L group[40.0% (32/80) vs 28.5% (98/344)] (P<0.05).Conclusion In patients with hypertention, the incidence of AF is correlated with TSH level.
