Abstract:Objective To evaluate the clinical effects of gabapentin combined with nerve block on cervicogenic headache (CEH).Methods Totally 60 CEH patients from June 2012 to April 2013 were randomly divided into observation group (30 cases) receiving gabapentin combined with nerve block and control group (30 cases) given nerve block.Visual analog scales (VAS) and quality of sleep (QS) were used to evaluate the curative effects 1 week,1 and 3 months after treatment. The adverse reactions were observed. Results One week,1 and 3 months after treatment, the VAS score and QS score were significantly increased compared with those beforeer treatment in observation group [(1.5 ± 0.6),(0.6 ± 0.5),(1.8 ± 0.7) scores vs (6.8 ± 2.5) scores;(1.9 ± 0.2),(1.1 ± 0.1),(0.9 ± 0.2) scores vs (4.5 ± 0.4) scores] and control group [1.7 ±1.2),(1.1 ±0.6),(3.3 ± 1.3) scores vs (6.7 ±2.8) scores,(3.6 ±0.3),(2.7 ±0.4),(2.5 ±0.6) scores vs (4.6 ±0.3) scores],and they were significantly lower in observation group compared with those in control group after treatment (P < 0.05).Three months after treatment, the cure rate and overall response rate in observation group were significantly higher than those in control group [73.3% (22/30) vs 53.3% (16/30),100.0% (30/30) vs 90.0% (27/30)] (P < 0.05).No serious adverse reactions occurred in both groups. Conclusion Gabapentin combined with nerve block is effective and safe in treating CEH,and it is superior to single nerve block.
