Abstract:Objective To explore the correlations among carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125),cardiac function and edema in the elderly patients with chronic heart failure content (CHF).Methods Totally 144 elderly patients (> 60 years) with CHF (CHF group) from January 2011 to June 2014 were enrolled.According to New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification, there were 48 of cardiac function grade l,41 of grade Ⅲ (41 cases) and 55 of grade Ⅳ.Thirty had simple peripheral edema,55 were complicated with serous effusion edema and 59 had no edema. In addition,42 healthy people were enrolled as control group. The N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP),CA125 and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were measured and compared between the two groups, the correlations between CA125 and cardiac function, edema were analyzed. Results The patients with cardiac function grade Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ in CHF group had significantly higher NT-proBNP and CA125 compared with control group [NT-proBNP:(1 646 ±963),(4 133 ± 1 112),(4 927 ± 1 596) ng/L vs (298±287) ng/L;CA125:(30±10),(44±11),(52±19) kU/Lvs (17±-5) kU/L] (P< 0.01).In observation group, the level of CA125 was positively correlated with NT-proBNP (r =0.77,P < 0.01),the levels of CA125 and NT-proBNP were both negatively correlated with LVEF (r =-0.57,r =-0.53,P <0.01).The levels of CA125 in patients with simple peripheral edema and serous effusion edema were both significantly higher than that in patients with no edema[(53 ± 18),(44 ± 12) kU/L vs (32 ± 11) kU/L] (P < 0.01).Conclusion The CA125 level increases along with the degree of heart failure in the elderly patients with CHF and is related with serous cavity effusion and peripheral edema.
