Effect of warm acupuncture therapy by using multi-function moxibustion apparatus in urinary retention after stroke

Abstract：Objective To observe the therapeutic effect of warm acupuncture therapy by using multifunction moxibustion apparatus in treatment of urinary retention after stroke.Methods Forty-six patients of urinary retention after stroke with indwelling catheter from December 2012 to September 2013 were enrolled and randomly divided into control group (23 cases) which was given traditional acupuncture therapy and observation group (23 cases) which was given warm acupuncture therapy with multi-function moxibustion apparatus (both 1 time/d).The first time of urination and the residual urine volume were recorded,and the efficiency was compared between the two groups after 5 days of treatment.The treatment was continued till the automatic urination was recovered.Results The total effective rate in observation group was 91.3％ (21/23),significantly higher than that in control group [78.3％ (18/23)] (P ＜ 0.05).The first time of urination was (43 ± 27) min and (76 ± 21) min in observation group and control group,with significant difference (P ＜ 0.05).The residual urine volume was (86 ± 36) ml and (121 ± 58)ml in observation group and control group,with significant difference (P ＜ 0.05).Conclusion Warm acupuncture therapy using multi-function moxibustion apparatus is effective in treatment of urinary retention after stroke.
