Risk factors of constipation in patients with coronary heart disease

Abstract:Objective To analyze the risk factors of constipation in patients with coronary heart disease.Methods Eighty patients with coronary heart disease and constipation were enrolled as constipation group; 50 healthy volunteers were as normal control group.Defecation,meal habits and daily activity were evaluated by using questionnaire designed by investigator.Results There was a significant difference regarding habit of defecation and diet,the proportion of the change of bowel way and environment,and daily water intake (> 1 500 ml)between constipation group and normal control group[28.8% (23/80) vs 76.0% (38/50),67.5% (54/80) vs 44.0% (22/50),36.2% (29/80) vs 62.0% (31/50)] (P =0.000,P =0.008,P =0.004).The proportion of regular consumption of fruits and vegetables between constipation group and normal control group had no statistically significant difference [43.8 % (35/80) vs 43.8% (30/50)] (P =0.071).There was no statistically significant difference in moderate amount of daily activity ratio constipation between constipation group and normal control group[47.5% (38/80) vs 47.5% (27/50)] (P =0.471).Conclusion Defecation and diet habits are closely associated with constipation in patients with coronary heart disease,accordingly establishing healthful habits of defecation and diet can decrease the incidence of constipation in the patients with coronary heart disease.
