Abstract:Objective To research the effect of periodontal intervention on the quality of life in terms of St George's Respiratory Questionnaire(SGRQ) scores before and after periodontal intervention among moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with chronic periodontal disease (CP). Methods Forty-three COPD patients with CP had periodontal intervention; 44 patients were as controls. SGRQ scores of two groups were measured at the baseline and one year after periodontal intervention. Results Compared with the control group after treatment [total:(47±10)scores, activity:(56±9)scores, impact:(38±9) scores]and the baseline, the test group showed significant reduction in the total scores[before:(46±7)scores, after:(38±8)scores], activity scores and [before:(56±10)scores, after:(43±7)scores]and impact scores [before:(38±9)scores, after :(30±8)scores](P<0.05); the symptom scores showed insignificant differences. Conclusion The SGRQ scores of COPD patients with CP are reduced, which suggests that periodontal intervention maybe play a positive role in COPD treatment.
