Abstract:Objective To explore the association between serum uric acid and hypertension. Methods In this prospective cohort study, the data was derived from the Kailuan study cohort. A total of 38 180 subjects were enrolled. The observation population was divided into four groups according to serum uric acid quartiles for men and women, respectively. Incidence of hypertension was obtained during the health examinations between 2010 and 2011. The relation between blood UA and hypertension was analyzed with the logistic regression method. Results ①There were 11 995 subjects of hypertension during health examinations between 2010 and 2011. Women in Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 group had 2 545, 2 545, 2 542, 2 499 cases, respectively; Male in Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 group had 7 045, 7 046, 6 932,7 007 cases, respectively. The incidence rates of hypertension were 14.4%(367 cases),16.9%(429 cases),19.1%(490 cases), 23.3%(582 cases), 33.6%(2 368 cases),33.8%(2 383 cases), 36.4%(2 522 cases) and 40.7%(2 854 cases), respectively. ② Compared with the first quintile, the RR values of the other three groups were 1.20(95%CI: 1.04-1.40),1.40(95%CI: 1.21-1.63),1.80(95%CI: 1.56-2.08) and 1.01(95%CI: 0.94-1.08),1.13(95%CI: 1.05-1.21),1.36(95%CI: 1.27-1.45) in women and men, respectively. ③Compared with the first quintile, the relative risk for hypertension after adjustment for age and other risk factors in the third and the fourth was 1.23(95%CI: 1.04-1.44) and 1.25(95%CI: 1.06-1.47). Conclusion Elevated serum uric acid level is associated with an increasing risk for hypertension.
