Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical features of hospitalized patients with brochiectasis and to assess if there are any significant differences in the age distribution of patients with different causes. Methods This study included hospitalized patients with bronchiectasis (n =271) in Beijing Anzhen Hospital from January 2003 to December 2010.The subjects were divided into four age groups:less than 44 years,45 to 59 years,60 to 74 years,75 years and older. We estimated the cause-specific prevalence by age groups. Results Hemoptysis, acute exacerbation of chronic pulmonary heart disease, fever and wheezing were the main reasons for hospital admission.Bronchiectasis secondary to tuberculosis and COPD were found to be much more common in elderly patients with 33 cases (42.9%) and 19 cases (24.7%) respectively, showing a statistically significant difference compared with other 3 groups(P <0.05).Bronchiectasis secondary to early-life respiratory infections was found to be much more common in young adults with 10 cases (32.3%) and 19 cases (22.9%) respectively, showing a statistically significant difference compared with other 2 groups (P < 0.05).Patients with moderate to severe COPD were associated with bronchiectasis. Conclusion Distribution of etiologies of bronchiectasis is different among age groups.
