Analysis on basic cognitive ability of intractable epilepsy patients

Abstract：Objective To analyze the basic cognitive ability of the patients with intractable epilepsy before surgery to provide a reference for therapy scheme.Methods The software of basic cognitive ability test was used to assess 46 patients with intractable epilepsy and the results were analyzed statistically. Results Compared with norm,the basic cognitive ability of intractable epilepsy patients was injured widely,including digit discrimination [ ( 10.0 ± 5.0) points vs ( 12.0 ± 4.0 ) points ],fast compare of Chinese character [ ( 8.6 ± 4.8 ) points vs ( 12.0 ±4.0 ) points ],mental arithmetic efficiency [ ( 7.4 ± 3.4) points vs ( 12.0 ± 4.0 ) points ],Chinese characters rotation [ (4.8 ±2.1)points vs (12.0 ±4.0)points],working memory [ (8.6 ±3.6)points vs (12.0 ±4.0)points]and two-character word recognition [ ( 10.0 ± 3.5) points vs ( 12.0 ± 4.0) points ],nonsense shape recognition [ ( 7.1 ±4.3 ) points vs ( 12.0 ± 4.0) points ],and there were significant difference ( all P ＜ 0.01 ).Conclusions The basic cognitive ability of the intractable epilepsy patients is significantly lower than norm,while the memory for Chinese character rotation is the most seriously damaged ability.Emphasis on the cognitive ability status of intractable epilepsy patients has important significance for assessing operative results,prognosis of patients and improvement of patients'life quality.
