Abstract:Objective To detect signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(Stat3)and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)expression and their roles in development and metastasis of gastric cancer. Methods Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of VEGF and Stat3 in normal gastric tissue, gastric carcinoma, lymph node metastasis and VEGF expression of Stat3.Results The positive expression rate of Stat3 and VEGF in gastric carcinoma was significantly higher than that in control group[64.6%(42/65)vs 0,76.9%(50/65)vs 0,all P < 0.05].The positive expression rate of Stat3 and VEGF was different in different histological types of gastric cancer; the positive expression rate of Stat3 and VEGF in undifferentiated carcinoma patients was 90.0%,90.0%,respectively.The positive expression rates of Stat3 and VEGF in different histological grade and the different clinical stages of gastric carcinoma were different. The positive expression rates of Stat3 and VEGF in poorly differentiated group and undifferentiated group was significantly higher than that in well-differentiated group and moderately differentiated group; Ⅲ + Ⅳ period [78.6%(22/28),92.9%(26/28)]was significantly higher than the phaseⅠ + Ⅱ [49.0%(24/49),67.4%(33/49)](P < 0.05).Stat3 and VEGF expression were associated with lymph node metastasis(P < 0.01).Conclusions Stat3 and VEGF are involved in gastric carcinogenesis, tumor metastasis and cancer prognosis.VEGF and stat3 are positively correlated with tumor transfer and invasion.
