Abstract:Objective To detect the bone marrow micrometastasis (BMM)of patients with non-small lung cancer(NSCLC) and to compare the result between using flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry. Methods From April 2004 to May 2007,160 cases of NSCLC who were not treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy in our hospital but undergoing surgical treatment for NSCLC were prospectively investigated for the presence of BMMs by using immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry.Bo(n)e marrow aspiration was done during the operation. Results Fifty-five of 160 patients(34.4% ) with NSCLC were found to have BMM using flow cytometry while 30.0% were found using immunohistochemistry. The 12 samples were positive for the flow cytometric assay but for the immunocytochemical test there were 112 negative samples. The 48 samples were positive for the immunocytochemical test but for the flow cytometric assay there were 5 negative samples. Conclusions Flow cytometric detection of BMM correlates with the immunohistochemical detection, and its level of sensitivity is greater than that of immunohistochemical staining.Compared with immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry is quick and cost effective.
