Abstract:Objective To explore gender differences of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients in community. Methods A retrospective study was done regardiny gender, age, smoking history, the types among atrial fibrillation and the causes of diseases of 4600 atrial fibrillation patients in 12 communities from May 2009 to February 2011.Results Patients ≥ 60 years of age were accounted for 96.0% (4416/4600) ; male patients were accounted for 40.5% (1863/4600) ; female patients were accounted for 59.5% (2737/4600) ( P < 0.01 ).In patients ≥ 60 years of age, female patients was more than male patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation [541 ( 19.8% ) vs 305( 16.4% ) ],permanent atrial fibrillation[ 1561 (57.0%) vs 1004(53.9% ) ],hypertension [660( 24.1% ) vs 372 ( 20.0% ) ],diabetes [ 497 ( 18.2% ) vs 273 ( 14.7% ) ],coronary heart disease [ 776 ( 28.4% ) vs 465 (25.0% ) ],cardiomyopathy [ 212 ( 7.7% ) vs 110 ( 5.9% ) ],rheumatic heart disease [ 197 ( 7.2% ) vs 103(5.5%) ],valvular degeneration [371 ( 13.6% ) vs 184(9.9% ) ],idiopathic atrial fibrillation [ 148(5.4% ) vs 67 (3.6%) ] and the unexplained [ 229 (8.4%) vs 113 (6.1% ) ] ( P < 0.05,P < 0.01 ).Male patients were significantly more than that of female patients in patients of< 60 years of age and smoking history ≥ 5 years( P <0.01 ).Gender differences in patients of sustained atrial fibrillation, pulmonary heart disease, pericarditis, hyperthyroidism, congenital heart disease and sick sinus syndrome had no statistical significances(P >0.05).Conclusions The atrial fibrillation patients in communities are mainly old people and older women are more common.Male patients are more common in middle-aged and youth.Smoking is a high risk factor for male patients.Female patient are more common in paroxysmal and permanent atrial fibrillation. The most common disease factors are coronary heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. The amount of female patients is significantlv higher than that of male patients.
