Videothoracoscopic treatment of patients with small pulmonary nodules

Abstract:Objective To investigate the efficacy of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery(VATS) in diagnosis and treatment of small pulmonary nodules.Methods From February 2004 to December 2010,68 patients with small solitary pulmonary nodules were treated by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.The nodules were removed during the operation,and then based on the results of quick pathological examination,malignant cases received further surgeries.Results Totally 37 patients were diagnosed with malignant disease.Thirty-one of them received VATS lobectomy for primary lung cancer,VATS resection of the lesions were performed on 6 patients who had bilateral( 1case)or metastatic lung cancer(5 cases).Benignlesions were confirmed in 31patients during the operation,and were removed by local resection.Conclusion VATS is effective in the diagnose and treatment of small pulmonary nodules.
