Abstract:Objective To investigate the validity of decompressive hemicraniectomy in massive cerebral infarctionl. Methods Totally 58 patients received early decompressive craniotomy because of deterioration after infarction. Results Fifty-eight patients had transtentorinl hernia due to massive cerebral infarction, among them 52 survived and 6 died. 52 survivals were followed up for 6 months and they had nearly normal intelligence and 38 of them lived independently. Conclusion Decompressive craniectomy can be a "life-saving" intervention to some of large cerebral infarction and functional recovery is probably associated with operation timing and extensive craniectomy.
