Abstract:Objective To evaluat the differences of corneal thickness and corneal endothelial morphology in type-2 diabetes mellitus compared with healthy subjects. Methods Noncontact specular microscopy were performed on 85 patients with type-2 diabetes and 212 control subjects. The values of corneal factors such as corneal thickness and endothelial cell morphology in diabetes and control subjects were compared. Results No significant differences were found between corneal thickness, endothelial cell density and percentage of hexagonal cells, coefficiency of variation for type-2 diabetes was significantly higher than that of control subjects (P <0. 01). Conclusion Patients with type-2 diabetes have more corneal morphological abnormalities, especially the coefficient of variation in cell size compared with the normal subjects.
