Intravesical instillation of THP immediately and regularly after transurethral resection of superficial bladder cancer

Abstract：Objective To evaluate intravesical instillation of THP immediately and regularly after transurethral resection of superficial bladder cancer (TURBt) for preventing postoperative recurrence.Methods A total of 140 patients were were randomized into groups A(70 cases):THP 30 mg immediately after TURBt;then routine intravesical instillation,30 mg THP,once a week for 8 weeks,then once a month up to 1 year;B(70 cases):routine intravesical instillation.All the patients were followed up for 2 years.The tumor recurrence rate and the side effects associated with therapy were observed.Results The tumor recurrence rate were 7.1%,18.6% (x~2=4.08,P＜0.05) in group A and group B at 2 year after operation,respectively.No case died of tumor progression during following up.No severe side effects appeard,short-term irritative voiding symptom rate was 22.8%,20% (x~2=0.16,P＞0.05) in group A and group B,respectively.Conclusions Compared with routine intravesical instillation,intravesical instillation of THP immediately and regularly after transurethral resection of superficial bladder cancer is effective and feasible,and the side effects are not increasing.
