Extended pterion approach for treatment of parietal frontotemporal contrecoup injury

Abstract:Objective To observe the effect of extended pterion approach for treatment of parietal frontotemporal contrecoup injury. Methods Fifty-six patients with parietal frontotemporal contrecoup injury were operated via extended pterion approach. The hematoma and inactive tissue in frontotemporal side were removed and then decompressive cranieetomy was applied. Results Among 56 patients, 24 cases recovered (42.9%). 5 cases became moderate disability (8.9%). 8 case had severe disability (14.3%). 3 cases remained vegetative state (5.4%)and 16 cases died (28. 6%). Conclusion Extended pterion approach for treatment of parietal frontotemporal contrecoup injury provides high-safety, excellent operation security and good recovery. It can improve quality of life and reduce mortality rate.
