The application of portable ultrasound for diagnosis of long bone fracture and for guiding manipulative reduction in Wenchuan earthquake

Abstract:Objective To observe the value of portable ultrasound for diagnosis of long bone fracture and for guiding manipulative reductionin in emergency. Methods Forty-eight patients suffered from lone bone fracture diagnosed by portable ultrasound in Wenchuan earthquake were enrolled, and they were treated with manipulative reductionin with guidance of ultrasound in the scene. Results Among these patients diagnosed by ultrasound, 18 patients were transverse fracture, 25 were oblique fracture, and 5 were thrypsis fracture. All were confirmed with the result of X-ray. In patients accepted manipulative reductionin treatment with guidance of ultrasound, 29 patients got curative result(60.4%) , 17 got moderate result (35.4%) and 2 got bad result (4.2%). Conclusion Portable ultrasound is good for diagnosis of lone bone fracture in emergency and guides the treatment of manipulative reduction which prevents secondary injury, therefore decreases complication and mortality.
