Adoption of advance curtain grouting in water burst treatment of Karst tunnels

Abstract：Karst water bursting and strand pressure water outburst may result in difficulties for excavation of tunnels. During the construction of section at working face of No.3 tunnel import of the main canal of Phase-I Water Diversion from Tao River, karst water bursting and strand pressure water outburst happened at tunnel face and surrounding areas when it went through the syncline structure limestone and invaded water bodies. Since the conventional drainage methods could not solve the problem, advanced embedded pipe curtain grouting method was adopted in order to block the water. This approach and technique successfully blocked water and ensured the normal excavation of the tunnel. The practice accumulates valuable experiences for dealing with similar situation during tunnel excavation.
