Regulation Effects of Nitric Oxide on Prostate and Penile Erection
Abstract:Nitric oxide (NO), an instable gaseous molecule with toxicproperties, is a biologically active substance involved in numerous pathologic and physiologic processes. NO is derived from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthase. As a non-adrenergic non-cholinergic neurotransmitter in the urogenital tract, it was previously shown to have a smooth muscle relaxing effect in the urogenital organs both in various animals and in humans. This review provides an overview of the generation mechanism of NO and its distribution in the organism. The regulation mechanism of smooth muscle relaxation mediated by NO is briefly summarized. The clinical studies of NO in the treatments of obstructive benign prostatic hyperplasia and penile erectile dysfunction are discussed as well.
