Oxidative Stress and Defective Sperm Function
Abstract:Human sperm is susceptible to oxidative stress originated fromtwo distinct cellular sources, leucocytes and spermatozoa. Since human sperm plasma membrane consists of a high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids and sperm itself has weak antioxidant properties, it could be attacked by the excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). As a consequence of lipid peroxidation, the sperm plasma membrane lose their fluiditys and integrity and the spermatozoa lose their function. The excess ROS can also attack the DNA in the sperm nucleus. There exists a close linkage between the oxidative DNA damage in sperm and the high incidence of cancer in the offspring.
