Expression of Smad1 and Smad5 Proteins in the Adult Rat Testis
Abstract:Objectives: To study the expression and localization of Smad1 andSmad5 proteins, intracellular signaling molecules of bone morphogenetic proteins, in the adult rat testis. Methods: Immunohistochemical ABC method with glucose oxidase-DAB-nickel enhancement technique was used in the present study. Results: Smad1 immunoreactivity was mainly located in the spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids. The reactive substance distributed in cytoplasma with negative nuclei. In contrast, Smad5 was weakly expressed in cytoplasma of Leydig cells. Conclusions: Smad1 expression in spermatogenic cells and Smad5 expression in Leydig cells provided direct evidence for elucidating the molecular mechanism of TGF-β action during spermatogenesis.
