Comprehensive Lifestyle Interventions for Dementia Prevention
Abstract:With the global aging population, the number of people with cognitive decline and dementia is increasing, placing a huge burden on society [1]. How to prevent cognitive decline and dementia has become an urgent problem in the field of elderly health. The 2024 updated expert committee report on dementia prevention from The Lancet identified 14 modifiable risk factors for dementia, and proposed that if these risk factors can be effectively controlled and eliminated, it is theoretically possible to reduce the global prevalence of dementia by 45% [2]. This shows that from a public health perspective, reducing modifiable risk factors could become a key strategy for dementia prevention. In 2015, The Lancet published the results of the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER), which showed that a two-year multi-domain lifestyle intervention could improve or maintain cognitive function in high-risk older adults [3]. Since then, multi-domain lifestyle interventions have received widespread attention globally. The World-Wide FINGERS Network (WW-FINGERS) has been conducting research in multiple countries to explore the effectiveness of these interventions in controlling cognitive decline and preventing dementia [4-5]. Among them, the results of the US POINTER study conducted in the United States were announced at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference held in Toronto, Canada on July 28, 2025, and were simultaneously published in the Journal of the American Medical Association [6].
