Correlation Analysis between Heart Rate Recovery after Exercise and Maximal Oxygen Uptake in Elderly Patients with Coronary Artery Disease
Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between heart rate recovery after exercise and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in elderly patients with coronary artery disease. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 271 elderly patients with coronary artery disease who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) at the Sixth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital from January 2015 to December 2019. All participants were divided into male (n=137) and female (n=134) groups based on gender. VO2max and maximal heart rate (HRmax) were obtained through CPET, and heart rates at different time periods after exercise (HRt) were recorded. Heart rate recovery (HRR) was calculated as HRmax - HRt, and values for HRR at 1 minute (HRR1), 2 minutes (HRR2), and 3 minutes (HRR3) after exercise were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation between VO2max and HRR1, HRR2, and HRR3. Results VO2max and body mass index were significantly higher in the male group compared to the female group, while HRmax, HRR1, HRR2, and HRR3 were significantly lower in the male group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). VO2max showed a significant positive correlation with HRR1, HRR2, and HRR3 (P < 0.05). The correlation coefficients were 0.39, 0.36, and 0.39 for males, and 0.45, 0.58, and 0.56 for females, respectively. The correlation between VO2max and HRR2 was significantly higher in females than in males (0.58 vs. 0.36, P = 0.020). Conclusion There is a good correlation between heart rate recovery after exercise and VO2max in elderly patients with coronary artery disease, especially in females, which can be used for monitoring and managing exercise intensity during rehabilitation.
