CircRNA-mediated competitive endogenous RNA mechanism in atherosclerosis
Abstract:Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic progressive vascular disease characterized by the formation of atheromatous plaques in the arterial wall, leading to vessel stenosis and hardening [1]. Endothelial cell dysfunction is considered a key initial event in AS [2]. After endothelial cell damage, chemokines and adhesion molecules are expressed, attracting monocytes to the damaged area. Smooth muscle cells switch from a contractile phenotype to a synthetic phenotype, enhancing their proliferative and migratory abilities, forming a fibrous cap that increases plaque stability [3]. Abnormal phenotypic conversion leads to a fragile fibrous cap, which can result in plaque rupture and thrombosis [4].
