Relationship between serum homocysteine level and cardiac function in a community population
Abstract:Objective To study the effect of serum homocysteine (Hcy) level on cardiac function expressed as serum NT-proBNP level in a community population. Methods A total of 1497 people in a community of Capital Iron and Steel Company were divided into high Hcy group (n=499) and normal Hcy group (n=998).Their body height, body weight,BMI,blood pressure, serum levels of TC,TG,LDL-C,HDL-C,fasting blood glucose,Hcy and creatinine were measured.Effect of Hcy on NT-proBNP was analyzed. Results The serum NT-proBNP level was significantly higher in high Hcy group than in normal Hcy group (72.07±146.54 ng/L vs 51.01-±-103.04 ng/L,P=0.000).Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that Hcy was positively related with NT-proBNP,a specific indicator for cardic insufficiency (B=0.090;95%CI:0.018-0.163,P=0.015).Conclusion Hcy is positively related with NT-proBNP in community population, indicating that Hcy is an independent risk factor for cardiac insufficiency.
