Relationship between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and white matter high signals
Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and white matter high signals (WMHS).Methods One hundred and fourteen COPD patients admitted to our hospital from January 2016 to January 2017 served as a COPD group and 148 subjects undergoing physical examination served as a control group in this study.Their demographic data, life style, history of disease, laboratory test data, brain MRI data were recorded. The relationship between COPD and WMHS were analyzed. Results The score of periventricular WMHS was significantly higher in COPD group than in control group (2.05 ±0.83 vs 1.79 ± 0.82,P=0.014).However,no significant difference was found in the score of deep WMHS between the two group (1.57 ± 0.78 vs 1.55 ± 1.03,P=0.943).The score of periventricular WMHS was quite different in COPD patients with a history of COPD ≤10 years,11-29 years, and ≥30 years (P =0.024).However,no significant difference was found in the score of periventricular WMHS in such patients (P=0.280).The score of periventricular WMHS was significantly lower in COPD patients with a history of COPD ≤10 years than in those with a history of COPD ≥30 years (1.89±0.86 vs 2.45±0.60,P<0.01).Logistic regression analysis showed that COPD was closely related with periventricular WMHS (OR=0.70,95 %CI:0.50-0.98,P=0.036).Conclusion COPD increases the susceptibility of COPD patients to periventricular WMHS.The longer the history of COPD is,the severer the periventricular WMHS are.
