Relationship between cerebral microbleeds and progressive stroke
Abstract:Objective To study whether cerebral microbleeds (CMB) are a predictor for progressive stroke (PS) and whether the number and location of CMB are related with PS.Methods One hundred and twenty-nine acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients were divided into PS group (n=40) and non-PS group (n=89) according to whether their NIHSS score was ≥2.The number and location of CMB were detected according to their susceptibility weighted imaging. The patients were further divided into mild CMB goup (n=37),moderate CMB goup (n=22),and severe CMB goup (n=9).The detection rates of CMB were compared between the two groups. The difference between PS and the number and location of CMB was further compared. Results CMB were detected in 41 patients of non-PS group and in 27 patients of PS group. The detection rate of CMB was lower in non-PS group than in PS group (46.1 % vs 67.5 %,P 0.02).The incidence of PS was significantly lower in mild CMB group than in moderate CMB group and severe group (29.7% vs 40.9% vs 77.8%,P<0.05).No significant difference was found in incidence of PS between different locations of CMB (P>0.05).Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that CMB and diabetes mellitus were the independent risk factors for PS (OR =2.59,P =0.01;OR =2.95,P=0.04).Conclusion CMB are the independent risk factor for PS and are related with the number of CMB but not related with the location of CMB.
