Relation of low serum estrogen level with osteoporosis and atherosclerosis in postmenopausal women
Abstract:Objective To study the relation of serum estrogen level with osteoporosis and atherosclerosis in postmenopausal women. Methods Two hundred and sixteen healthy Han females were divided into pretmenopause group (n=57),1-10 years menopause group (n =69),11-20 years menopause group (n=36),and >20 years menopause group (n=54).Their serum estrogen levels were measured by ELISA,their osteoporosis was assessed according to their bone mineral density (BMD) and T scores of lumbar and hip, their atherosclerotic burden was assayed according to their ankle-brachial index (ABI),brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV),and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT).Results The baPWV was significantly faster and the CIMT was significantly thicker while the BMD of lumbar and hip was significantly lower in 3 postmenopause groups than in premenopause group and the ABI was significantly lower in >20 years menopause group than in premenopause group (P<0.01).The serum estrogen level was negatively related with the menopause time and positively related with the BMD and T scores of lumbar and hip in postmenopausalwomen(r=-0.423,P<0.01;r=0.490,P<0.01;r=0.556,P<0.01;r=0.620,P<0.01;r=0.523,P<0.01).The serum estrogen level was positively related with the ABI and negatively related with the baPWV and CIMT in postmenopausal women (r=0.228,P< 0.01;r=-0.250,P<0.01;r=-0.203,P<0.05).Conclusion The serum estrogen level is closely related with osteoporosis and atherosclerosis in postmenopausal women.
