Relationship between serum vitamin D level and progressive ischemic stroke
Abstract:Objective To further look for the risk factors for progressive ischemic stroke (PIS) by studying the relationship between serum vitamin D level and PIS.Methods Three hundred and ninety-two acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients were divided into PIS group (n=148) and nonPIS group (n=244).Their serum vitamin D levels were measured. The patients were further divided into low serum vitamin D level group, moderate serum vitamin D level group, relatively high serum vitamin D level group and high serum vitamin D level group (98 in each group). Results The serum vitamin D level was lower in PIS group than in non PIS group (15.88±1.72 μg/L vs 22.16±1.64 μg/L,P<0.01).Logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of PIS was 5.841-fold higher in patients with a low serum vitamin D level than in those with a high serum vitamin D level. Conclusion Low serum vitamin D level is related with PIS,and can thus be used as an independent predictor for PIS.
