Relationship between methylene reductase C677T gene polymorphism and isolated systolic hypertension in elderly people
Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between 5,10-methylene reductase (MTHFR) gene C677T polymorphism and isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) in elderly people. Methods Two hundred and twenty ISH patients aged ≥60 years served as an ISH group and 128 hypertension-free elderly people undergoing physical examination served as a control group in this study.Their MTHFR gene C677T polymorphism was detected and their serum homocysteine level was measured. Results The frequency of T allelic gene was higher and that of C allelic gene was lower in ISH group than in control group (51.8% vs 37.5 %,x2 =13.33,P=0.000;48.2% vs 62.5%,x2=13.33,P=0.000).The distribution rate of C/C genotype was lower and that of C/T genotype was higher in ISH group than in control group (20.5% vs 40.6%,x2 =16.38,P=0.000;55.5% vs 43.8%,x2 =4.44,P=0.035).The serum homocysteine level was higher in ISH group than in control group (P=0.01).Logistic regression analysis showed that MTHFR gene C677T polymorphism and serum homocysteine and uric acid levels were the independent risk factors for ISH in elderly people (OR=1.910,95%CI:1.356-1.910,P=0.00;OR=1.084,95%CI:1.084-1.084,P=0.02;OR=1.004,95%CI:1.001-1.006,P=0.01).Conclusion MTHFR gene C677T polymorphism and serum homocysteine level are the independent risk factors for ISH in elderly people.
