Effect of salvianolic acid on cerebral perfusion in acute ischemic stroke patients
Abstract:Objective To study the effect of salvianolic acid (SA) on cerebral perfusion in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients and its possible mechanism. Methods Eighty-eight AIS patients admitted to our hospital within 72 h after onset of their disease were divided into SA group (n=46) and control group (n=42) and underwent MRI before and after treatment.Their cerebral perfusion was judged according to the perfusion parameters (ratio of ipsilateal signal value in region of interest/its mirror signal value). The outcome of patients after 3-month treatment was assessed according to the mRS.Results No significant difference was found in perfusion parameters between the two groups before treatment (P>0.05).The relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) in DWI-showed lesions and their surrounding tissue was significantly lower in SA group than in control group on day 14 after treatment (0.87±0.36 vs 1.28±0.63,P=0.01;0.89±0.44 vs 1.40± 0.74,P=0.02;0.88±0.37 vs 1.36±0.54,P=0.00;0.89±0.50 vs 1.49±0.79,P=0.01),indicating that the CBV in DWI-showed lesions and their surrounding tissue increased significantly in SA group. The mRS score was lower and the outcome was better in SA group than in control group during the 3-month follow-up period (1.26±1.71 vs 2.33±1.57,P=0.003).Conclusion SA improves the outcome of AIS patients by selectively increasing the CBV in hypoperfused brain tissues.Microcirculation compensation may be one of its mechanisms.
