Effect of WBC count on long-term outcome in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction
Abstract:Objective To study the effect of WBC count on long-term outcome in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).Methods Five hundred and forty-five acute STEMI patients were divided into group A with their WBC count≤10× 109/L and group B with their WBC count>10 × 109/L.Major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE),fatality rate and incidence of long-term MACCE were compared between the two groups. Results The mean age was significantly older and the incidence of in-hospital MACCE was significantly lower in group A than in group B (63.8±-11.4 years vs 60.4±11.4 years,P=0.001;5.1% vs 10.3%,P=0.013).The patients were followed up for 28 months, during which the incidence of MACCE and all-cause fatality rate were significantly lower in group A than in group B (12.9% vs 16.9%,P=0.018;2.6% vs 5.7%,P=0.045).Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that elevated WBC count was an independent predictor for long-term MACCE in acute STEMI patients (HR=1.166,95%CI:1.104-1.231,P=0.036).Conclusion Elevated WBC count is an independent predictor for short-term and long-term poor outcomes in patients with acute STEMI.
