Role of apoE in regulating the association between serum gonadal axis hormone level and cognitive impairment in AD patients
Abstract:Objective To study the role of apoE in regulating the association between serum gonadal axis hormone level and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients. Methods Eighty-six male AD patients served as AD group 1,87 female AD patients served as AD group 2,115 healthy males served as control group 1 and 112 healthy females served as control group 2.Their serum levels of total estradiol (TE2),total testosterone (TT),luteinizing hormone and sex hormone binding globin (SHBG) were measured and their bioavailable estradiol (BE2) and bioavailable testosterone were tested. The cognitive function of each AD patient was assessed. Results The serum TT level was significantly lower in AD group 1 than in control group 1 (16.21± 7.32 nmol/L vs 17.84±7.41 nmol/L,P<0.05).The serum TE2 and BE2 levels were significantly higher in AD group 2 than in control group 2 (57.16±25.33 pmol/L vs 47.58±25.63 pmol/L,P<0.01;30.96±16.14 pmol/L vs 28.88±17.86 pmol/L,P<0.05).The BE2 was negatively associated with verbal memory and the SHBG was positively associated with verbal memory in female AD patients with negative apoEε4.Conclusion Higher estrogen level exacerbates the cognitive impairment, and aPOEε4 affects the association between SHBG level and cognitive impairment in female AD patients.
