Correlation between prevalene of cardiovascular diseases and controlled hypertension in elderly male hypertensive patients
Abstract:Objective To study the correlation between the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and controlled hypertension in elderly male hypertensive patients. Methods Seven hundred and nineteen male hypertensive patients were divided into normotensive group (n=228),well-controlled hypertension group (n=389) and poorly-controlled hypertension group (n=102).The correlation of the prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD),chronic heart failure, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF),persistent AF with controlled hypertension was analyzed. Results The prevalence of angina pectoris and myocardial infarction was significantly higher in well-controlled hypertension group than in normotensive group (48.8% vs 26.8%,P<0.01;16.2% vs 6.6%,P< 0.01).The prevalence of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, paroxysmal AF,and persistent AF was significantly higher in well-controlled hypertension group than in poorly-controlled hypertension group (62.7% vs 26.8%,P<0.01,12.7% vs 6.6%,P<0.01;11.8% vs 4.8%,P<0.05;8.8% vs 3.1%,P<0.05).The risk to develop CHD was significantly greater in well-controlled hypertension group than in poorly controlled hypertension group (OR=5.067 vs OR=3.561).Conclusion Although antihypertensionsion treatment and control of the risk factors, such as blood glucose, blood lipids, and obesity, can reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in elderly male hypertensive patients, effective control of hypertension still plays an important role in control of the occurrence and development of cardiovascular diseases.Age and other concomitant diseases can also affect the outcomes in hypertensive patients.
