Association between carotid artery disease and fundus atherosclerosis in ischemic stroke patients
Abstract:Objective To study the association between carotid artery disease and fundus athero‐sclerosis in ischemic stroke patients .Methods One hundred and seventy‐seven ischemic stroke patients underwent head CT/MRI ,carotid artery ultrasonography ,and fundoscopy to assess the severity of their carotid IM T ,carotid artery stenosis and fundus atherosclerosis .Results Among the 177 patients ,no carotid artery disease was detected in 10 patients (5 .6% ) ,carotid artery IM T increased in 22 patients (12 .4% ) ,carotid plaques formed in 121 patients (68 .4% ) ,carotid artery stenosis was found in 24 patients (13 .6% ) ,fundus atherosclerotic lesions were observed in 142 patients (80 .2% ) .Fundus atherosclerosis was associated with increased carotid artery IM T and carotid stenosis (P<0 .05) .However ,different single indicator of fundus atherosclerosis lesions was not associated with carotid artery IMT and carotid stenosis (P>0 .05) .Conclusion Fundus atherosclerosis is associated with carotid artery disease .Fundoscopy can thus be used as an assis‐tant method in assessing systemic vascular condition and in diagnosing carotid artery disease .
