Drug therapy for elderly type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with mild cognitive impairment
Abstract:Objective To observe the early therapeutic effect of nimodipine in combination of vita‐min B12 and folic acid in elderly T2DM patients with MCI .Methods Two hundred elderly T2DM patients with MCI were divided into nimodipine treatment group (group A) ,folic acid+ vitamin B12 treatment group (group B) ,nimodipine+vitamin B12 +folic acid treatment group (group C) , and placebo treatment group (group D) ,50 in each group .The patients received routine treatment for 52 weeks .Their cognitive function was scored according to the MoCA and CDR before treat‐ment and 24 weeks and 52 weeks after treatment ,respectively .Their serum levels of Hcy ,folic acid and vitamin B12 were measured .Results The MoCA score was significantly higher in groups A ,B and C 24 weeks and 52 weeks after treatment than before treatment ,and 52 weeks after treatment than 24 weeks after treatment (P<0 .05 ,P<0 .01) with no patient progressed to de‐mentia .The MoCA score was significantly lower in group D 24 weeks and 52 weeks after treat‐ment (P<0 .05 ,P<0 .01) with 3 patients (6 .25% )progressed to dementia .The serum Hcy level was significantly lower whereas the serum folic acid and vitamin B12 levels were significantly high‐er in groups B and C after treatment than before treatment(P<0 .01) .Conclusion Nimodipine in combination with vitamin B12 and folic acid can effectively improve the cognitive function in elder‐ly T2DM patients with MCI .The longer the teat time is ,the more significant the therapeutic effect is .
