Effect of hypernatremia mortality, hospital stay time and cost in neurocritically ill patients
Abstract:Objective To study the incidence of hypernatremia and its effect on mortality ,hospital stay time and cost in neurocrtically ill patients .Methods The clinical data about 274 neurocriti-cally ill patients (52 died ,222 survived) admitted to our department were retrospectively ana-lyzed .Hypernatremia was diagnosed when the serum sodium level was >150 mmol/L .Results Of the 52 died patients and the 222 survived patients ,26 (50 .0% ) and 23 (10 .4% ) were diagnosed with hypernatremia respectively (P=0 .000) .Hypernatremia was an independent risk factor for the death of neurocritically ill patients (OR=5 .08 ,95% CI:2 .21-11 .63 ,P=0 .000)and was pos-itively related with their hospital stay time (days)and cost although no significant difference was found between them (β=0 .023 ,P=0 .756 ;β=0 .094 ,P=0 .200) .Conclusion The incidence of hypernatremia is high in neurocritically ill patients .Hypernatremia is an independent risk factor for their death and positively related with their hospital stay time and cost .
