Protective effect of corilagin against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in gerbils
Abstract:Objective To study the protective effects of corilagin against cerebral ischemia-reperfu-sion injury. Method Sixty gerbils were randomly divided into six groups(5 male and 5 female gerbils in each group):sham operation control group, model group, three corilagin groups(5 mg/kg,10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg) and nimodipine group. The model of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury was produced by 10-min occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries followed by 5-day reperfusion. The EEG was recorded after reperfusion. Contents of water, calcium and sodium in cerebral cortex were determined after 5-day reperfusion. Results Corilagin groups(10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg) significantly improved the recovery of electroencephalogram potential amplitude after reperfusion, which was significantly higher than that in model group (P < 0.01). Corilagin groups (10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg) significantly decreased contents of water and calcium in cortex after 5-day reperfusion, which were significantly lower than those in model group (P < 0. 05, P < 0.01). However, no significant effect on cortex sodium content was observed (P > 0.05). Conclu-sion Corilagin showed protective effects against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in gerbils, and its mechanism might be related to reducing calcium and water contents in cerebral cortex.
