Abstract:Periodontitis is a destructive inflammatory condition that affects the supporting structures of the teeth. Its clinical manifestations include gum bleeding, periodontal pocket formation, alveolar bone resorption, tooth mobility, and ultimately tooth loss, all of which significantly compromise patient health.Periodontitis is especially prevalent among elderly patients.Consequently, safeguarding and restoring periodontal health is of critical importance given the context of an aging population in China.Clinically, periodontitis often necessitates the use of oral antibiotics. However,a significant proportion of periodontal pathogenic bacteria have developed resistance to drugs, which not only complicates their complete eradication but also exacerbates the issue of drug resistance among these pathogens.Metal nanoparticles have garnered increasing attention due to their potent antimicrobial properties without inducing resistance, along with their immunomodulatory effects and ability to promote periodontal tissue and alveolar bone regeneration. This review summarizes and discusses research advancements in last 5 years in nanoparticle materials incorporating various metals, such as gold, silver, copper, zinc, magnesium, titanium, and cobalt. The aim is to facilitate further exploration by subsequent researchers into their long-term safety and potential biological properties, thereby providing novel therapeutic approaches for periodontitis treatment.
