Effect of the number of natural functional teeth and oral rehabilitation status on nutritional risk in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract：Objective To investigate the effects of the Number of Natural Functional Teeth and Oral Rehabilitation Status on Nutritional Risk in Elderly Patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus(T2DM).Methods A total of 296 elderly patients with T2DM who were hospitalized in the Department of Endocrinology of the first affiliated hospital with Nanjing medical university from September 2023 to March 2024 were recruited as research participants.The number of natural functional teeth and oral restoration conditions among these patients were systematically assessed.The geriatric nutritional risk index(GNRI)was used to assess the nutritional status of the patients.The influencing factors of GNRI in elderly patients with T2DM were analyzed by Spearman correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis.Results Among the 296 patients,251 cases(84.8％)had tooth loss,and the number of natural functional teeth of the patients was 24.0(15.3,27.0).Spearman correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between the number of natural functional teeth and the GNRI(r=0.156,P=0.007).Of the total,73 patients(24.66％)had complete oral restoration,64(21.62％)had incomplete restoration,10(3.38％)had abnormal restoration,104(35.14％)had no restoration,and 45(15.20％)did not require restoration.One-way analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences in GNRI among patients with different dental restoration behaviors(F=4.907,P=0.001).Multiple linear regression analysis showed that incomplete dental repair(t=-2.089,P=0.038)and completely unrepaired(t=-2.416,P=0.016)were independent risk factors for GNRI.Conclusion Tooth loss is common in elderly patients with T2DM,and the number of functional natural teeth and different oral restoration behaviors were risk factors for nutritional risk.
